Michigan State University Extension
  Internet Connection

Extension provides information and offers on-going educational programs in land and resource management to the citizens of Michigan. Extension has responsibilities in Agriculture and Natural Resources, Community and Economic Development and Children, Youth, and Families program areas. Natural resource education encompasses all three program areas of Michigan State University Extension. Educational programs in resource management touch on Community and Economic Development based on the State’s natural resources providing education to youth in natural resource management so they will be equipped with the tools necessary to make wise decisions in their adult life.

Extension also provides direct information to landowners through a variety of educational programs designed to enhance the individual’s knowledge of land and resource management. These program areas have similar goals – they seek to help people better understand their environments, make the best possible use of their resources and enhance the quality of life for themselves, their families, and their communities through education and wise decision making.

The Extension is a source for many publications, educational resource materials and workshops about forestry. These are available either from County Extension Offices or from the MSU Bulletin Office .

Auto Tours

• U.S. 27 North Auto Tour. This tour runs from Clare to Grayling and explains 10 different sites along the route. Brochures can be picked up at the Clare Visitor Center, various other locations within the vicinity, or call the Michigan Forest Resource Alliance at 1-800-474-1718 for a free copy.  Internet Connection.
• Upper Peninsula Forestry Auto Tour. The Society of American Foresters developed this self-guided tour to identify and explain the different timber types found in the U.P. and the importance of each. Call the MFRA office for a free tour guide.  Internet Connection.
• Mead Self-Guided Forest Auto Tour. Located 5 miles east of Manistique. The 3.5 mile tour is designed to acquaint visitors with different forest types and proper forest management techniques on Mead ownership throughout the Upper Peninsula. • Jack Pine Wildlife Viewing Tour. A 48 mile self-guided auto tour through the scenic AuSable River valley and unique jack pine ecosystem – and home to the critically endangered Kirtland’s warbler. Demonstration Forests

• Oscoda County Forestry Demonstration Area. Located 2 miles north of Fairview on Reber Road. On-site logging demonstrations are done each July during the Oscoda County Fair and Great Lakes Forestry Expo.
• The Champion Menominee River Demonstration Forest. Just across the Menominee River from Champion’s Quinnesec pulp and paper mill, a 27-acre parcel of land has been set aside to give visitors a first-hand look at the ways in which Champion works with nature to conserve and promote a forest’s health, beauty, diversity, and productivity. This walking tour has 10 stops that add up to a hands-on way to learn about how Champion regenerates, protects, and conserves their unique forest resources.
