There are two SAF programs involving Continuing Education.

1.  Certified Forester Program, that includes CFE credits

2.  Continuing Forestry Education (CFE) Program, including a CFE certificate

1.  CERTIFIED FORESTER (CF) PROGRAM

SAF's CF program entails a written examination, a set of eligibility requirements, compliance with the "CF Standards of Professional Service", and an initial feeEligibility to take the exam includes a forestry degree (or equivalent) and at least five years forestry employment.  A practice test exists on the national SAF website. 

Recertification comes due every three years.  To remain as an SAF certified forester, 60 hours of continuing education must be documented, plus pay a fee.  You do not need to be an SAF member to become certified under the SAF program, however the fees are higher for non-members.  For information about the SAF CF program, visit the national website at www.safnet.org.

2.  CONTINUING FORESTRY EDUCATION (CFE) PROGRAM

Continuing education and professional development are of increasing importance to foresters and allied professionals.  The Society of American Foresters' national CFE program is voluntary and participation is open to SAF members and nonmembers.  Over a three year period, participants must acquire 150 continuing education hours, with allocations in several categories.  For information about CF Program, visit the national office website

SAF is now offering Continuing Forestry Education (CFE) credits through the Journal of Forestry.  JOF readers have the opportunity to acquire a total of 8 hours of Category 1 CFE credit by passing a 20-item quiz each quarter. 

Quizzes are derived from current issues of the Journal and are accessible through the National SAF "Education Link".    The direct link to the quiz is: www.safnet.org/commerce/jofcfequiz.cfm.

Quiz facts:

   * Each quiz carries 2 hours of CFE credit.
   * Each quiz will be on-line for only three months.
   * The questions are derived from articles in the previous quarter's issues of the Journal.
   * A passing score is 70% of questions answered correctly.
   * The fee for each quiz is $20.
   * Only the first quiz submitted will be eligible for CFE credit.
